2025
Rochdale came together in a powerful celebration of unity, inclusion and community spirit at the iconic Rochdale Town Hall for the Rochdale Diversity Awards 2025. Now in its 13th year, the event honoured individuals and organisations whose work continues to make Rochdale a beacon of diversity and equality.
A special thank you to the judging panel, whose dedication and discernment ensured that each nomination was carefully considered and every winner truly deserving. Their commitment to fairness and integrity is deeply appreciated. This year’s panel included representatives from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Altus Education Partnership, Rochdale Borough Council, Your Trust, Hopwood Hall College, Spring Hill Hospice, Molesworth Solicitors, Rochdale Training, and Greater Manchester Police.
The evening brought together civic leaders, local businesses, public sector, charities, and community organisations from across the borough. In his opening address, Zulf Ahmed, CEO of KYP, stated:
“As CEO of KYP, I am incredibly proud to stand before you this evening to recognise the extraordinary individuals and organisations working to make our borough more inclusive, more compassionate and more just.”
The event featured inspiring speeches from prominent figures including Asrar ul Haq OBE, His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant; Janet Emsley, Mayor of Rochdale; Neil Emmott, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council; and Rt. Hon. Paul Waugh, Member of Parliament for Rochdale.
Neil Emmott remarked:
“Rochdale has a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world, and it’s fantastic that we have wonderful diversity throughout our community.”
Law student Isa Ahmed shared his reflections on identity and inclusion:
“Being British is more than holding a passport—it’s about everyday moments, growing up in a diverse community, and standing up for fairness and justice. Policies alone aren’t enough—we need courage to challenge hate, empower young people, rebuild trust, and make inclusion everyday practice. I believe in a future where diversity is celebrated, where no child feels they don’t belong, and where our differences make us stronger.”
Rt. Hon. Paul Waugh added:
“I’m delighted that our borough celebrates diversity in all its forms. In all the nominees tonight, we see a common thread – their passion for their community and the people they help and represent.”
Janet Emsley, Mayor of Rochdale stated:
“I’d like to thank all of you here for playing the different parts that you play, for being the different people that we are in this borough of ours, which is so diverse”
James Binks, Chief Executive, Rochdale Borough Council declared:
“There is so much that brings us together as a borough, regardless of the challenges of the times that we’re living in, our co-operative values and history have shone through in our pioneering spirit.”
The evening served as a moment to recognise and appreciate the finalists and winners, whose tireless efforts across Rochdale continue to promote diversity, inclusion, and equality. Their dedication is helping to shape a borough where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Entertainment was provided by the SAWN Choir, who captivated the audience with a medley of traditional African music and uplifting cover songs.
The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship by Rochdale Borough Council, Your Trust Rochdale, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing, Altus Education Partnership, Molesworths, Rochdale Council of Mosques, Community Carelines, Hopwood Hall College, and Rochdale Training.
Rochdale Boroughwide Housing expressed their pride in sponsoring the event:
