RTOF (Refugee Transition Outcome Fund)
Our ‘Easy English’ Club is part of GMCA’s refugee support programme, funded through Greater Manchester Refugee Integration Partnership / Refugee Transitions Outcomes Fund.
As a delivery partner, KYP provides a great informal way for refugees to come together to practise their language skills in a supportive and friendly environment, connecting people with similar experiences and common language learning goals.
Easy English is a 4 week programme consisting of conversational English, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. A variety of teaching methods are employed, including games, role-play, group discussions (etc), to make sessions engaging and interactive, thus building confidence, enhancing language skills and creating social connectivity.
We combine visits to the local fire station, library, college, health centre, focussing on participants’ personal needs and interests. This develops social interaction and life skills and provides opportunities to use English language skills to successfully integrate into British culture and society.
We provide additional services to support refugees through our weekly food pantry, Advice and Welfare Service, vocational training and Job Club which offers CV compilation, career guidance, job searching techniques and interview preparation.
The programme provides volunteering opportunities within our centre and across other VCFSE organisations. This can include supporting our Community Pantry, Job Club, assisting in delivery of training and vocational skills, sharing skills within our Women’s Groups/ sessions for Elders, etc. Volunteers can also gain practical experience in a range of KYP functions, eg Reception, Administration, Community Development, Little Gems Nursery.
All our volunteers are treated as members of staff and play a valuable role in supporting others whilst acquiring language and employability skills. Overall, the Easy English Club and the volunteering element can provide refugees with a sense of purpose and achievement to progress in life and contribute to society.
